Nikolai Bashmakov, a member of the Tatarstan Independence Committee, commented on Ilya Yashin's remarks about the "dismemberers of Russia."
Nikolai Bashmakov:
"Ilya Yashin has once again confirmed what many have been saying for a long time. Behind the appealing rhetoric about 'democracy' and 'federalism' lies the same old idea of preserving Russia in its current form.
When he says that 'we have no common path with those who seek to dismember Russia,' it means that, in his view, the right of peoples to self-determination ends where the question of preserving the Russian state begins.
Genuine federalism is impossible without voluntariness. If a constituent entity does not have the right to determine its own political future, then it is not a federation but a centralized state with merely symbolic regional powers.
Talk of decentralization is meaningless if, at the same time, the very right of peoples to decide their own future freely is rejected. One cannot speak of freedom while simultaneously declaring unacceptable any outcome that might lead to independence.
For me, the right to self-determination is not 'dismemberment' but one of the fundamental principles of international law. If a state is truly confident in its own appeal, it has no reason to fear the free choice of its peoples."
