Татарстан это не прошлое. Татарстан это наше будущее.
Tatarstan Is Not the Past. Tatarstan Is Our Future.
A message to the people of Tatarstan on Independence Day from Nikolai Bashmakov, a member of the Tatarstan Independence Committee.
Today, we remember the day when the people of Tatarstan declared their right to determine their own destiny.
August 30 is not simply a date on the calendar. It is a symbol of the political will of a people that has preserved its identity, language, culture and historical memory for centuries.
Decolonization is not revenge and not hatred toward other peoples. It is about restoring agency to peoples whose history has been written for them for far too long.
Tatarstan has the right to be the subject of its own history.
We want a future in which the Tatar language is not reduced to a decorative element, but becomes a full-fledged language of the state, education, science and public life.
We want a society where the culture of Tatarstan can develop freely, where historical memory is not rewritten in the interests of an imperial center, and where the people themselves determine what their state should be.
We want a European Tatarstan — democratic, governed by the rule of law, peaceful and open to the world.
Tatarstan can become a state that builds relations with its neighbors not through submission, but through equal cooperation.
For me, decolonization is above all the right of a person and a people to say:
“We decide for ourselves who we are and what our future will be.”
Empires come and go. Political regimes come to an end. But peoples remain.
Memory remains.
The language remains.
The culture remains.
The right to freedom remains.
And therefore, today is not only about the past.
It is about the future of an independent Tatarstan.
And now, a personal note from me.
These days, I have been on the road, so I was unable to publish this message exactly on August 30. But for me, this date is not limited to a single day on the calendar. The memory of our history and the idea of a free Tatarstan do not depend on where we are or on which day we press the “publish” button.
Let this text appear a little later, but my thoughts and my position remain unchanged.
Happy Independence Day of Tatarstan!
Azat Tatarstan yashи!
Free Tatarstan lives.
